Why rounded shapes are ahead of the interiors curve

Sweeping curves are the new straight lines. Meet the interiors trend that’s shaping our homes…

Earthy tones, mid-century sideboards, green – so far, so 2022 – but while the best interior trends have been merrily enjoying (read: hogging) the limelight, a softer, more rounded home decor trend has been quietly, humbly, building momentum.

Creeping up on Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds near you, we are talking curve, of course.

The experts’ number one trick for open plan living, curve furnishings work in modern, minimalist, traditionalist and retro homes – from rounded dining tables to wiggle mirrors, curved coffee tables, wave headboards, scallop rugs, curved consoles and more… there’s a curve to curb your every interior desire.

Yet this humble homeware hero is more than just versatile, it’s timeless, welcoming, calming, cocooning and child-friendly too. Designed for all of life’s moments…

The Table

Tired of knocking into your tradish’ dining table? The linchpin of most living spaces, dining tables are where we gather with friends and family to mark the big moments, and the mundane. And yet rectangular tables can feel imposing, restrictive in small spaces and borderline boxy in open plan.

The cure? Curve. The best curve tables are designed to improve circulation – aka how easily people can circulate around the room without obstruction. ‘It’s not something you always consciously notice,’ explains designer Daniel Rawlings, ‘but you certainly notice when it’s not there.’

The Trestle’s lozenge top allows the table to be easily circulated in a multi-use environment, like an open-plan family space,’ says Daniel. ‘In turn, the slatted trestle legs let light pass through, so your tabletop doesn't become this pool of shadow in the corner of the room.’

Designed with real-life in mind, round corners are easier to configure too (for all those 8-person parties) and in turn help guests feel more at home. Oh, and if the thought of table legs makes your shins shudder, fear not – no horizontal or diagonal support bars equals no risk of shin bashing here. The same goes for zero-corners – ideal for speedy kids and tottering toddlers. Put simply, this is one top table.

The Rug

Interested in adding some curve to your home without forking out on new furniture? Soft furnishings are an easy way to dip your toe into a trend – helping to create a luxury-look, but on a smaller budget. Scallop, wave and wiggle trims are hugely popular in 2022, as are these geometric curve creations, designed to soften and soothe the feel of a room. The Collage Connect Rug has all the timeless qualities of a mid-century modern investment buy, while the complementary cushion is an easy win for anyone wanting to create curves for less.

The Chair

If there’s one thing that sums up the appeal of curve furniture, it’s The Chair. And if furniture could cuddle, the Scoop would be handing out free hugs on the reg’, kissing your knee when you fall, and tucking you in at night (metaphorically speaking, obviously – it’s a chair).

Available in boucle, one of 2023’s biggest interior design trends, the Scoop has a stylish, textural look that feels sooooo good, making it the perfect sanctuary to nestle into at the end of a long, busy day. Use it as a calming, sitting room cocoon or to add some bijoux to your bedroom (it doubles as an excellent chairdrobe), safe in the knowledge that the boucle Scoop is designed to last a lifetime.
